FOLLOWING THE MOON — Everyday Habit

by Spencer Grendahl

Develop the habit of following the moon every day. Ancient astrologers always knew where the moon was. It was a discipline of the craft of astrology to do this. Remember, before the coming of electrical lighting, the full moon was the most illumined nocturnal period of the month. It gave lovers and others a chance to meet. Social and cabals would have meetings at this time, also it was a time when one could travel after sundown. Others times the moon in certain signs and in certain months carried omens. Waning quarter moon in Scorpio, be aware of the curse old enemy to seek revenge. It was important to know these things. Farmers planted by the moon. Monthly moon cycles were used to know timing. And of course we all hope for a good Harvest Moon Festival.

How to Follow the Moon

1) Use an ephemeris or a computer to note where the moon is each morning as you finish your meditation, or have your morning coffee or tea. Or consider it as you take your morning walk, or even drive to work.
2) Consider how it relates to your chart. What sign and house is it in in your chart? See what energies are released. Unless it is in Cancer (which it rules), what is the ruler of the sign and house the moon is in? Will it hit any of the angles? Where could there be flow? Where difficulties? How about other transiting planets and aspects to them.
3) Watch how the day goes and make a mental note. Try to write down a brief comment in a daily planner where you keep your appointments.

It is useful to do this. At the least, if a particularly good thing or bad happened, write a note. Got good news about something, or got a call from so and so. Or got lucky in one way or another and describe in a couple of word clues.

These word clues should just be enough to refresh you memory. No need to do a lot of paperwork here. The long view is what you see in a month or two of this practice.

Do not expect miracles, but do look for any patterns. Any signs the moon is in seem better? Worse? Consider any element that seems to bring more action in you chart and you experience of the day. [Like my accident in the parking lot.]

I have found that more often than not the moon can be a trigger of things—especially when it also sets off transiting planets, asteroids, key point, the nodes the vertex. .

Give it an honest try. Or just review where the moon was during something of significance during the month. Was the moon’s position of interest to the event?
